Martin Rodker & Winnie
“Pauline loves spending time with Winnie, so wrote a poem for her and her owner, Martin. I think this poem is my favourite of all Pauline’s wonderful writings as it’s so lovingly written and heartfelt.”
Winnie, a blue roan cockapoo, is a regular visitor to Little Bramingham Farm, a residential care home on the outskirts of Luton, Bedfordshire, run by the charity Friends of the Elderly. “She adores the residents just as much as they adore her,” smiles PAT Volunteer Martin Rodker. “They give her their undivided devotion, and she loves being the centre of attention.
“Winnie and I thoroughly enjoy seeing the residents each week and it’s wonderful to hear all their stories of the animals they had as children, growing up or as family pets.”
One resident, Jean, says: “Winnie is so good, clever and cute. She completely lights up my room every visit. I mean, she’s such a pretty girl and if you were feeling a bit down, she could brighten anyone’s day.”
Pauline's poem
Another resident, Pauline, has even been inspired to write a poem about the loving PAT Dog, entitled Our Friend Winnie (see 'More piccies', right), and gifted it to the PAT Team. It begins:
“We have a friend, her name is Winnie.
She comes once a week wearing a pinny.
The pinny shows the charity she’s from.
It’s just to show she will do no wrong.”
And concludes:
“Thank you Winnie for keeping in touch.
If you stopped coming we’d miss you so much.”
Karen Charity, Activities Co-ordinator at Little Bramingham Farm, adds: “I was having a chat with Pauline one day, enjoying a cup of tea, and we were reminiscing about our favourite hobbies and pastimes. Pauline mentioned that she enjoyed writing poems and how the subject matter for her words came from different places such as things she enjoys, her life experiences or even something she’s seen on the news.

We are always looking to recruit more volunteers.
