Volunteers’ Week 2025: Harpal’s story
It’s Volunteers’ Week and we continue to celebrate – thank you to all our volunteers who support our wonderful charity.
Today we hear from PAT Volunteer Harpal Tamber, who visits a hospital in Hillingdon, London, with his dog Buddy. Harpal's wife Harpreet volunteers too.
Tell us about your PAT role
I joined Pets As Therapy in April 2023 and visit Hillingdon Hospital with Buddy, a three-year-old Cavapoochon, every Wednesday. We go to several wards, primarily the neurology, stroke and Bumblebee ward, which is the children's unit. Buddy brings joy and comfort to everyone he meets, many of whom are going through a very difficult time.
My wife Harpreet also volunteers with PAT and takes Buddy to St Helen's School in Hillingdon every Tuesday as part of the Read2Dogs scheme. Children are given the chance to read to Buddy in a calm, non-judgemental environment – helping to build their confidence and love of reading.
What makes Buddy so special?
We've had him since he was an eight-week-old puppy. He's a beloved member of our family and thrives on being around people.
He adores attention and, of course, Buddy cuddles, which makes him the perfect PAT Dog. Buddy has the most wonderful temperament: calm, affectionate and deeply intuitive.
Why do you enjoy volunteer?
Volunteering with Pets As Therapy has been a deeply rewarding experience for our family. It's a way to give back to our local community and support people who may be facing stress, illness or personal challenges.
Why should others volunteer with PAT?
I wholeheartedly recommend becoming a PAT Volunteer. It brings a genuine sense of fulfilment and connection. In fact, I've already encouraged others to join and they're now proud PAT Volunteers themselves.
We are always looking to recruit more volunteers.
