PAT Volunteer receives British Citizen Award

Barry Coase, a PAT Volunteer from East Sussex, has been recognised for his outstanding contributions to society and his work with PAT Dog Bella. He recently received a British Citizen Award (BCA) at the Palace of Westminster in London – and Bella joined him at the event.

Barry is a veteran who transitioned to civilian life, despite facing significant physical and mental challenges due to a severe back injury. Barry suffers with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but has channelled himself to overcome this and try to change the lives of others. Barry’s life transformed when he took in a timid rescue dog with a troubled past. They instantly connected and Bella instinctively provided comfort during nightmares and moments of distress.

Recognising the difference Bella had made to his life, now the pair visit special needs schools, children’s wards, ITU, A&E and palliative care settings and provide support to patients and their families. Barry and Bella also volunteer with Combat Stress, the UK’s leading veterans mental health charity.

"We have met some inspirational people and have been to some exceptional places," Barry smiles. "Without Pets As Therapy this would not have been possible. Thank you PAT!"

The British Citizen Award, now in its 10th year, celebrates individuals who make positive impacts on their communities across the UK. Established in 2015, it recognises those who work tirelessly and selflessly to improve society.
